WEEK ONE

PERSPECTIVE
With the Men Down, Women Take Center Stage
Jennifer Frey
With the top players in the men's game either struggling, uninspiring or invisible, the women's draw is the more compelling portion of this year's Wimbledon, writes The Post's Jennifer Frey. With exciting play from the new guard, now is the time for the women's game to shine.

Hingis, Seles Storm Into Final 16
Fire and rain delayed Saturday's matches but defending champion Martina Hingis (pictured) and sixth-seeded Monica Seles blazed into the final 16. Seles beat Indonesian Yayuk Basuki, making the fourth round at Wimbledon for the first time since 1992. Hingis breezed past unseeded Elena Likhovtseva. Play was halted momentarily when a nearby building caught fire. The fire was dealt with only to have showers move in.

Graf Loses in Straight Sets to Zvereva
No. 4 seed Steffi Graf (pictured), who was attempting to win her eighth Wimbledon title, lost Friday to Natasha Zvereva, 6-4, 7-5 in a third-round match. Graf had beaten Zvereva the previous 17 times and it was her sixth singles defeat at Wimbledon since her debut in 1984. Graf's loss sets the stage for another fan favorite, No. 6 Monica Seles, who again sat through another round of bad Wimbledon weather.

    Rios Vents His Wimbledon Frustration
Second-seeded Marcelo Rios (pictured), took out some of his anger on his racket during his 6-3, 3-6, 7-5, 3-6, 6-3 loss to Francisco Clavet. But the Chilean saved some of his frustration for Wimbledon as a whole. "Maybe there are little things that they're not very good at in this tournament," Rios said. After making a quick exit from the championship, Rios said he planned to leave the country as soon as possible.

Meanwhile, top-seeded Martina Hingis — playing on Centre Court for the first time since winning the title last year — advanced past Lisa Raymond in straight sets. In other action, No. 3 seed Jana Novotna defeated Sandra Kleinova while sixth-seeded Patrick Rafter advanced.

Steffi Graf (pictured), the grand dame of women's tennis, returned to the site of some of her greatest triumphs — Wimbledon's Centre Court — on Monday. The 1996 champion, known for her stoic demeanor, had considered retirement after a knee injury sidelined her for a year. After defeating Spain's Gala Leon Garcia, 6-4, 6-1, she allowed some tears of relief to flow. Meanwhile, Yevgeny Kafelnikov was ousted by Mark Philippoussis and Anna Kournikova withdrew from the tournament.

The continuing conflict between two generations have helped the women's draw take center stage at this year's tournament. No. 1 Martina Hingis (left) headlines a group of teenagers that includes Anna Kournikova and Williams sisters, Venus and Serena, competing alongside the likes of veterans Steffi Graf (right), Monica Seles and Arantxa Sanchez Vicario.
