The 1981 Virginia Cavaliers boasted one of the best college big men of all time in Ralph Sampson. Scrappy role players surrounded Sampson and All-Tournament guard Jeff Lamp and made the Cavaliers a Final Four team in 1981. Virginia went 13-1 in the ACC and was the No. 1 team in the nation for most of the season. The Cavs ran into a North Carolina squad that it swept in the regular season but Al Wood scored 39 in the semifinals and the Tar Heels won 78-65 over Virginia. Sampson and Lamp provided the big one-two punch that carried Virginia and that inside-outside duo would cause problems against any college team of any era.
