    Ponies on Assateague Island National Seashore

We interrupt our regularly scheduled activities for a walk along the beach at sunset.

The beach resorts are busy with concerts, festivals, art shows and more. Here is a roundup of some of the best of the summer activities at the mid-Atlantic beach resorts. The events are free unless noted.

Lewes

JUNE 12 -- Best of Beach Art Auction, starting at 6 p.m. on the grounds of the Beebe Medical Foundation, Fourth Street and Savannah Road. 302/227-8408.

JUNE 19 -- Lewes Garden Tour, from 10 to 5. Admission TBA. Get tickets at the Lewes Chamber of Commerce & Visitors Bureau, 120 Kings Hwy. 302/645-8073.

SEPT. 11-12 -- Nanticoke Indian Pow Wow, on Route 297 six miles east of Millsboro. The annual pow wow showcases Nanticoke ceremonial dancing, storytelling, crafts and food. 302/945-7022, 302/934-6777.

Rehoboth Beach

JUNE 4-JULY 12 -- 26th annual Members' Craft Exhibit, Rehoboth Art League, 12 Dodds Lane, Henlopen Acres. Open Monday-Saturday 10 to 4, Sundays 1 to 4. 302/227-8408.

JULY 4 -- Music starting at 4 at the bandstand at the end of Rehoboth Avenue, followed by fireworks launched from the water at 9:30. 302/227-2772.

JULY 6-7 -- The 50th annual Cottage Tour, to benefit the Rehoboth Art League. See the unique homes and gardens of the area. Tickets are $15; get them at the Rehoboth Art League and selected area merchants. 302/227-8408.

JULY 16-19 -- 61st annual Members' Fine Art Exhibit, Monday-Saturday from 10 to 4, Sundays noon to 4 at the Rehoboth Art League, 12 Dodds Lane, Henlopen Acres. 302/226-8408.

AUG. 14-15 and 21-22 -- Outdoor Art Exhibit, with more than 100 fine arts and crafts artisans and their creations, from 10 to 5 each day at the Rehoboth Art League, 12 Dodds Lane, Henlopen Acres. 302/226-8408.

Dewey Beach

JULY 31-AUG. 1 -- East Coast Skimboarding Championships, on the beach at New Orleans Street in Dewey Beach. Times TBA. 302/227-8288.

Bethany Beach

JULY 4 -- A parade at noon, with fireworks at dusk. 302/539-2100.

JULY 28-29 -- Beach to Bay Cottage Tour, from 10 to 4 each day. The tour of 10 cottages, which is sponsored by the South Coastal Library, is self-guided and requires an automobile. Ticket prices TBA. 302/537-5828.

SEPT. 11 -- 21st annual Bethany Beach Boardwalk Arts Festival, featuring scores of works by local artists and crafts artisans from 10 to 6 on the boardwalk. 302/539-2100.

Fenwick Island

JUNE 26 -- Fenwick Island Arts and Crafts Fair, from 9 to 4 with crafts, a raffle, food and other activities around the Town Hall on Route 1. 302/537-9793.

Ocean City and Area

JUNE 17 -- Maryland State Fireman's Parade, at 1 p.m. on Baltimore Avenue between South Second Street and Ninth Street. 410/289-2800.

JUNE 17-19 -- Annual Cypress Festival, with carnival rides, entertainment and other activities, June 17 from 6 to 10, June 18 from 6 to 11 and June 19 from 9 a.m. to 11:30 p.m. in Cypress Park, Front Street in nearby Pocomoke City. 410/957-1919.

JULY 4 -- Jamboree in the Park celebrates the Fourth with music, crafts, games and fireworks, from noon to 10 p.m. in Northside Park, 125th Street and bayside. 410/250-0125.

JULY 4 -- Fireworks Jubilee, with music in the evening on the beach at Caroline Street and fireworks at 9:30 p.m. from the Ocean City pier. 410/289-2800, 800/626-2326.

JULY 8-11 -- 12th annual $100,000 Tuna Tournament at the OC Fishing Center. Entry fee. 410/213-1121, 800/322-3065.

JULY 17-22 -- Starpower National Competition, a national talent search with contestants competing for regional titles in singing, dancing and acting, from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. each day at the Convention Center, 40th Street and bayside. 301/870-9550.

AUG. 2-6 -- White Marlin Open, with more than 250 boats expected to enter. Spectators are welcome for the daily weigh-ins from 4 to 9 at the Harbour Island Marina, 14th Street and bayside. 410/289-9229.

AUG. 13-15 -- Worcester County Fair, with exhibits, livestock, games and other entertainment, Aug. 13 from noon to 7, Aug. 14 from 10 to 5 and Aug. 15 from 10 to 4 at Furnace Town, on Route 12 in Snow Hill. Admission TBA. 410/632-1972.

AUG. 19-21 -- Great Pocomoke Fair, an old-fashioned family fair with carnival rides, horse show, antique cars and 4-H activities, Aug. 19 from 6 to 10, Aug. 20 from 10 a.m. to 11 p.m., Aug. 21 from 9 a.m. to 11:30 p.m. at the Pocomoke Fairgrounds, Eighth and Broad streets, Pocomoke City. SEPT. 3-5 -- Labor Day Arts and Crafts Festival, from 10 to 5 each day at the Ocean City Convention Center, 40th Street and bayside. 410/352-5851.

SEPT. 12 -- African American Heritage Festival, with dance, music, exhibits and food, Sept. 12 from 11 to 7:30 at Stephen Decatur Park in nearby Berlin, Md. 800/322-1988.

SEPT. 16-19 -- Polkamotion-by-the-Ocean, a celebration of the polka with professional dance groups, dance demonstrations, ethnic food and other activities, Sept. 16 from 4 to 1 a.m., Sept. 17-18 from noon to 1 a.m., Sept. 19 from noon to 7 at the Convention Center, 40th Street and bayside. SEPT. 23-26 -- Sunfest '99, a sprawling festival at the Inlet parking lot and the beach, with treasure hunts, concerts, kite-flying contests, crafts and other activities. 410/289-2800.

Chincoteague

JUNE 19-20 -- Power Boat Regatta, held at Memorial Park. 757/336-6161.

JULY 2-3, July 9-10, July 16-17, July 23-24 and July 26-31 and Aug. 6-7 (not on Sundays) -- Annual Chincoteague Firemen's Carnival, from 7:30 to 11 each night, with the major event the pony roundup on July 28 (see next item). The carnival is on South Main Street. 757/336-6161.

JULY 28-29 -- Wild pony roundup and swim, starting July 28 at approximately 7 a.m. and continuing until 1 p.m. The ponies swim Assateague Channel at Chincoteague Memorial Park on the east side of the island. From 8 a.m. to noon July 29, the ponies will be auctioned, with proceeds benefiting the Chincoteague Volunteer Fire Department. 757/336-6161.

OCT. 9 -- Chincoteague Island Oyster Festival, with all-you-can-eat oysters, clam fritters, hush puppies, cole slaw and more. Tickets are sold by mail ($30, plus a $2.50 certified mail fee). Call 757/336-6161 for tickets, which usually are sold out by August.
