Presidents throughout the century have used the national tree lighting to reflect on the state of the world. In 1939, when President Franklin Roosevelt lit this tree, his theme was peace. The lights were red and green, a sharp contrast to the blacked-out cities of London, Paris and Berlin, which were on the minds of people around the world.
