'Dante's Peak'

Harry Dalton (Pierce Brosnan) is a government volcanologist sent to investigate seismic activity near a long-dormant peak. He is aided in his research by the town's mayor, Rachel Wando (Linda Hamilton). They discover proof that an eruption is imminent. But nobody wants the bad news, and selfish officials don't want to jinx a big investment deal.

Harry and Rachel then discover that her two children have gone farther up the peak to rescue their grandmother, who adamantly refuses to leave her mountain. -- Rita Kempley
