'In & Out'

Scene from this movie Kevin Kline is Howard Brackett, a rather swishy high school teacher in Greenleaf, Ind., who inspires his students with poetry and literature. Things are looking up. He’s popular with his students. He’s about to marry his longtime fiancee, Emily. And Cameron, a former pupil-turned professional actor, is up for an Academy Award.

The good news: On national television, Cameron wins the Oscar and acknowledges Howard as a major influence. The bad news: He concludes the tribute with these words: "And he’s gay." Howard and the little town of Greenleaf fall into stunned silence. Howard’s first order of business is to assure his fiancee, his parents and the sudden invasion of TV journalists that he’s a heterosexual. -- Desson Howe
