'Last Man Standing'
When mercenary loner John Smith (Bruce Willis) rattles through the jerkwater town of Jericho, Tex., he makes the mistake of ogling the lovely Mexican moll of Irish gangster Doyle. Doyle’s henchmen vandalize his car and strongly advise him to get out of town. But Smith, whose biggest problem is a lack of conscience, smells a chance to get even and make money while he’s at it.
Jericho is ruled by two gangs, it turns out, including the nattier, Strozzi mob. In this time of Prohibition, the rival gangs are using Jericho’s proximity to the Mexican border to run illegal booze. Smith’s grand design is to play the Irish and Italians against each other, reap their ill-gotten gains and ride into the sunset. -- Desson Howe
