  'Phantom Menace' Characters

Most people on Earth who can utter a word know the names Han Solo, Darth Vader, Princess Leia and Luke Skywalker. "Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace" will introduce whole new worlds, characters and creatures. Here's a guide to some of those new faces (a few attached to familiar names) who lived a long time ago . . . you know the rest.

This just-past-his-prime Jedi Master follows his instincts and is often seen as reckless. His apprentice is Obi-Wan Kenobi. Jinn feels the Force in young Anakin Skywalker.
Darth Maul

Maul is a Dark Lord of Sith who carries a double-sided light saber. He's on the dark side of the Force. Maul's mission is to kill Qui-Gon Jinn and Obi-Wan Kenobi.

The teenage queen of Naboo is the future wife of Anakin Skywalker and future mother of Luke Skywalker and Princess Leia.

He is a Gungan, which is a race that lives in an underwater city on the planet Naboo. An outcast and clumsy, Jar Jar provides comic relief. He talks with an accent.

He'll one day be the mentor to Anakin and his son, Luke, and Darth Vader's nemesis. He is now an apprentice to Qui-Gon Jinn. His Jedi training is almost complete.

We know he'll become Darth Vader. But Luke and Leia's dad is a 9-year-old slave who dreams of becoming a Jedi. The Force is strong with him. And don't bet against Ani in pod race.

He is the head of the queen's security forces. Panaka teams with Qui-Gonn Jinn and Obi-Wan Kenobi to get the queen off Naboo during the invasion.

The wise-cracking droid doesn't even have an outer covering yet. On Tatooine, Anakin is building the protocal droid to help his mother. He claims he'll never ride in a starship.

The little guy is discovered on a Naboo cruiser. The droid was designed to interface with fighter craft and computer systems. He saves the cruiser before teaming up with Anakin.

He holds a seat in the Main Senate Chamber on Coruscant. He represents many star systems, including the people of Naboo. Later becomes Emperor of the Empire.

This winged creature owns a junk yard on Tatooine. His slaves are Shmi Skywalker and her son, Anakin. He won them on a bet. His gambling addiction leads to a wager with Qui-Gon Jinn.

She is the mother of Anakin Skywalker. They are both slaves to Watto on Tatooine. But what happened to Mr. Skywalker?

Lott Dod
He represents the Trade Federation in the Galactic Senate. He says he is "unaware" of an invasion of the planet Naboo by the Federation.
