Twenty-four of the 42 area theaters that will be showing "Star Wars: Episode I The Phantom Menace" will sell advance tickets by phone beginning at 3 p.m. Wednesday. The movie opens May 19. Five theaters will also sell tickets online at www.moviefone.com Cineplex Odeon Uptown and Rio 14 and Loews Centerpark 8, Germantown 6 and Wheaton Plaza 11. The service charge is $1.25 per ticket. All the theaters, of course, will also sell tickets at the box office. Ticket sales will be limited at most locations to 12 tickets per person or transaction. Showtimes at the single-screen Uptown Washington's premier movie theater will be 10 a.m., 1, 4, 7 and 10 p.m. and 1 a.m. Friday and Saturday. The 1 a.m. show will be dropped Sunday through Thursday. Many theaters will begin showing the film at 12:01 a.m. May 19. The Cineplex Loews and United Artists theaters use MovieFone, which sells tickets in 18 cities, for their advance phone sales. The service charge is $1.25. Seven American Multi-Cinema theaters and three Hoyts theaters will sell advance tickets by phone and at the box office. The surcharge for phone orders is $1. The Hoyts theaters will limit phone sales to nine tickets per transaction. The four Multiplex Cinemas owned by National Amusements in Northern Virginia sell tickets by phone. Steve Bochan, a district manager for National Amusements, said the theaters will retain a policy that does not allow a theater to sell out by phone. The Regal Countryside Cinema 14 in Sterling accepts phone orders, but the service is not automated. Employees take down the order at no extra charge. However, the theater recommends that people come to the box office. MovieFone will allow a maximum of 12 tickets to be purchased during a one-week period. Only six tickets can be bought per transaction. Once you purchase seven tickets, you can not make another transaction. Thus, buyers wishing 12 tickets must buy six tickets during each transaction. Only calls made at 3 p.m. and after on May 12 will have the information for "The Phantom Menace."
