Take a mousepad tour of the world's cultural riches by clicking a few of the links below. The list doesn't aspire to be comprehensive – we've singled out our favorites, what we think are the most intriguing, best designed Web sites for national and world museums. If you've got one we should know about, please write a note to museums@washingtonpost.com and tell us.

National Museums

Since it was founded in 1931, the Whitney Museum of American Art has exhibited a mix of cutting-edge contemporary art and work from well-established American artists like Georgia O'Keeffe, Edward Hopper and Alexander Calder. The museum's Web site is not only a resource for visitors, but also a work of art itself. Especially noteworthy is its presentation of the current exhibit, "The American Century: Art & Culture 1900-2000." This elegantly constructed virtual exhibition space is jam-packed with information and offers a plethora of multimedia bells and whistles, including a dynamic pop-up time line and animated introductions to every decade. Online tours of the exhibit can be created and customized, or you can take the director's tour – an audio trip through the century. Teacher resources are available at the site's learning center, along with a great children's section where kids can make their own art or learn how to make crafts inspired by works from the exhibit. Tickets to Whitney exhibits can be purchased directly through the site as well. Recently, The Post's Jo Ann Lewis wrote a review of the first installment of "The American Century."
