  Chuck Close
Close's contemporary paintings fuse a triangular grid with amoeba-like shapes of vivid color. "I've never had 'artist's block' in my entire career," he says. "I never waited for the clouds to part and lightning to strike because I just kept altering the variables." At right is Close's most recent self-portrait.

"Chuck Close: A Retrospective" is at the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden
through Jan. 10.
