    Always Taking Money?

    May 8, 1998

It's no mystery why we love the ATM; as a friend once summarized, "I push buttons and it gives me money." What is a mystery, though, is the "service charges" so many ATMs extort. Avoid the dollar drain with the list of local fee-free ATMs at http://www.applefcu.org/html/nofee.html. The page, compiled by a Fairfax-based credit union, hasn't been updated since 1996 (!), but since most of the listed ATMs are run by credit unions that the überbanks can't buy and shut down, it's generally reliable. Traveling? Visit http://www.surcharge-free-atms.com to find no-fee ATMs in New England, plus links to other Web directories of no-fee cash machines.
