Netscape Navigator 3.01 Upgrade Guide

By Dan Pacheco
WashingtonPost.com

These instructions show how to upgrade to Netscape Navigator 3.01. We also offer help with upgrading to Internet Explorer 3.01.

To get the most out of WashingtonPost.com and the Web, you should download, install and set up the latest version of Netscape Navigator. This guide is written for Windows 95, Windows 3.1 and Macintosh computers. Upgrading will cost you $69, but you will get free upgrades to future Netscape browsers for a full year.

Why should you upgrade? Web pages look and work better with it. It also lets you play multimedia clips without having to go through a messy setup process.

Download and Install Navigator 3.0

  • First, you must create a folder at the top of your hard drive called download. Here's how to do it in several platforms:
  • In Windows 95, go to your desktop and double-click on "My Computer", then on "(C:)," and choose "File-New Folder" from the menu bar.
  • In Windows 3.1, open File Manager (in the Main group), choose "Directory-Create New Directory".
  • On a Macintosh, double-click your hard drive and choose "File-New Folder" from the desktop menu.
  • Go to the Netscape download page and follow instructions for "Netscape Navigator 3.01 Standard With Components" and choose your computer type (Windows 95, Windows 3.1 or Macintosh), language, and location.

  • Click on one of the download links provided by Netscape. When prompted, choose to transfer the file to the "download" directory you just created. (If you are a Windows 95 users and don't know how to find files and folders in a dialogue box, read our guide.)

  • When your browser's progress bar disappears, go to the "download" folder you created and double-click on the installation file (on a PC, this will look something like "n32e301p.exe"). Follow the instructions on your screen. If you have an existing version of Netscape that you plan to delete, make sure you change the folder Netscape chooses to install to. For instance, if it wants to set roots in c:\apps\netscape\, change it to c:\apps\net30\. This way, you can delete the folder c:\apps\netscape without interfering with the newer Navigator 3.0.

    Set Up Netscape
