How to Find Files in Windows 95
Finding files in Windows 95 is easy once you know the basics of files and folders, and there are two ways to do it. You can find folders from the desktop using "My Computer." If you're downloading or saving a file, you can also find folders from a dialogue box.
Finding Files From the Desktop
The first place to go when you're looking for a file is "My Computer," an icon which appears at the top left-hand corner of the Windows 95 desktop.
Double-clicking on on a drive or folder takes you inside the folder. When you double-click the "C:\" icon, you will see a list of folders that are its contents. Scroll to the folder you're looking for (for instance, c:\download) and double-click it. Now you are in that folder:
Keep double-clicking folders until you find the one you're looking for. If you don't want to end up with seven open folders, just hold down the "control" key as you double-click. This will cause the new folder to appear in place of the previous one.
Using the Toolbar
Many users are not aware that they can get to any folder on the hard drive from any other. The folder "tool bar" makes that possible. Go to the "View" menu in your open folder and choose "Toolbar" so that it is checked. When you do that, some new icons will appear at the top of the folder:
The name of the folder you are in appears in the white pull-down box. When you click that box, all of the folders above and directly below the current folder will appear. You can immediately jump to another folder by choosing it in the menu.
To go to the folder directly above the one you're in, click the yellow arrow icon in the toolbar.
Power Tip
The icon to the right of the yellow arrow button can also be used to create a new folder.
Finding Files From a Dialogue Box
The Windows dialogue box shows up when you need to access files and folders from a program such as Netscape. In the Web Outfitter, you will need to do this when downloading programs and configuring viewers.
In Netscape, your dialogue box will look something like this:
Does it look familiar? It should. A dialogue box is really a folder and toolbar in disguise. You can move up and down through folders using the yellow arrow button and white pull-down box.
You'll encounter this box each time you download a file. To find the folder c:\download, just click the yellow arrow icon to move up to the C:\ drive. Then double-click on "download." When you're safely in the download directory, click "Save" to start the download process.
You'll also use this box when configuring a tool to work with Netscape. For instance, to find the file c:\wplany, click the yellow arrow icon to move up to the C:\ drive. Then double-click on "wplany" to enter that directory. Lastly, you want to click twice on "wplany.exe".
