These instructions explain how to configure Netscape Navigator, the most popular Web browser, to view QuickTime VR. We offer help for Windows 95, Windows 3.1 and Macintosh.
Install QuickTime
First, bookmark this page so you can find it again easily. You'll have to close your browser later to install QuickTime.
To see QuickTime VR, you must have both Apple's QuickTime software and a newer version of the QuickTime plug-in. If you have not gotten QuickTime, skip ahead.
If you have already downloaded the QuickTime software and plug-in (i.e., if you followed our instructions for QuickTime video), you only need to update your plug-in.
Go to the page listed below next to your computer type. Then click the download link under the heading "QuickTime Plug-in 1.1". (If you're not sure how to download files, see our tutorial.)
After the download is complete, close all programs that you have open. Find the installation file where you stored it on your hard drive. It will start with QTPLUG. Double-click it and follow the instructions it gives you.
Now you're ready to view a sample scene of the cherry blossoms in Washington's tidal basin (QTVR, 93K).
When the photo appears on the screen, click on it and hold the mouse button down. Drag your mouse to look around and rotate the picture.
If You Don't Have QuickTime
If you don't have any QuickTime software, go to the Quicktime page listed below next to your computer type. Then click the link for the "easy download" from Apple. (If you're not sure how to download files, see our tutorial.)
After the download is complete, close all programs that you have open. Find the installation file where you stored it on your hard drive. It will start with QTEASY. Double-click it and follow the instructions on your screen. (See our QuickTime video page for detailed instructions on downloading the full QuickTime suite.)
Now you're ready to view a panorama of the new FDR memorial (QTVR, 145K).
When the photo appears on the screen, click on it and hold the mouse button down.
Click and drag your mouse to rotate the picture. To zoom in, hold down the "Shift" or "Option" key. To zoom out, hold down "Control" key.
