How to See Shockwave

These instructions explain how to configure Netscape Navigator, the most popular Web browser, to play Shockwave multimedia features, games and presentations. Follow these steps for all operating systems.

Get Ready

  • Make sure you are familiar with the techniques in our downloading guide. In particular, make sure you have a "download" folder.

  • Only three browsers allow the viewing of Shockwave: the final version of Netscape Navigator 2.02, Navigator 3.0 / 3.01 and Internet Explorer 3.0. To find out which version you have, go to your browser's "Help" menu and choose "About ..." If you don't have the right version, see our browser upgrade guide.

  • Add this page to your bookmarks so you can return to it easily.

    Install Shockwave

  • Go to the Shockwave download center. Select your computer type (i.e. Windows 95, Windows 3.1, Macintosh) and "Shockwave Director." Then click "Get Shockwave." Click on one of the download links and save the file in your "download" folder.

If you're using Internet Explorer 3.0, go to the Shockwave ActiveX page. The site will automatically install the Shockwave ActiveX component. When prompted, choose to install the viewer.

  • Close your Web browser. Go to your download folder on your hard drive, click twice on the program you just downloaded (n32e0002.exe, or something similar), and follow the instructions on your screen.

  • Try it out! When the installation is complete, open your browser again and return to this page. Try out a sample Shockwave game based on 1980s video arcade, "Frogger" (Shockwave, 98K).

    Increase Cache Size (Optional)

Depending on the complexity of the Shockwave presentation you are viewing, you could receive a message from your computer telling you to increase your cache size. (The cache is a special area Netscape reserves on your hard drive to speed the loading of Web pages). Here's how to do it:

    • In Netscape Navigator, click the "Options" menu and "Network Preferences." Then click the "Cache" tab.

    • Look for the number in the box labeled "Disk Cache" and write it down for future reference.

    • Increase the number by 1000, click OK and return to the shockwave presentation.

    • If it still won't work, change the number to 6000. change the cache size to its original value to avoid wasting disk space.

  • I For Best Results
You may find it easier to follow these instructions if you print out this page and keep it nearby. If you have a printer, go to the "File" menu above and choose "Print."

Since we send you to other sites, you might also want to bookmark this page so you can easily return. To learn how to do this, refer to our user guide.
