Instead of the usual flowers and card for Mother's Day, why not treat Mom (or the motherly figure in your life) to a weekend on historic Amelia Island, Fla. instead? Amelia Island Plantation, a beachfront golf and tennis resort and spa, is offering a package that will keep costs down but still make Mom feel like a queen.

Located about 30 miles north of Jacksonville, the resort is offering rooms starting at $83 per night, per person, for Mother's Day weekend, May 10-12. The package includes a paraffin hand treatment for Mom, bicycle rentals, golf, tennis, nature tours and a $10 gift certificate that she can fritter away at one of the shops. If you stay Sunday night, the hotel throws in Monday morning breakfast.

In addition to the beach, the resort offers championship golf, a full-service spa (treatments are extra) and hiking trails.

A search on travelocity.com showed roundrips from Washington's three airports to Jacksonville hoverng around $170 per person. If you're not interested in renting a car, the resort offers shuttle service from Jacksonville Airport for $72 per person, roundtrip.

To book this package for you and the guest of honor, call the resort's reservation line: 888/261-6161.

  • April 10, 2003: Serious baseball fans may want to consider this serious splurge: See two games in either New York stadium, get a package of themed goodies and stay for two nights in the suite that for 18 years was the residence of Yankee legend Joe Dimaggio.

The "Yankee Clipper" package at the Radisson Lexington Hotel (at East 48th and Lexington in midtown Manhattan) puts you in Dimaggio's "Centerfield Suite," a multi-room spread with a living room, kitchenette and an outdoor terrace with a view. The suite is decorated in Dimaggio memorabilia both on-field and off, including photos of Joe and Marilyn Monroe, to whom he was married for a year.

In addition to the accommodations, you'll receive two tickets to two games at either Shea or Yankee stadiums (depending on which team is in town), the 2003 Baseball Encyclopedia, two logo golf shirts and a baseball basket including snacks and beer.

The price for your date with Joe? $1,665 for the package (no one said greatness came cheaply). This deal runs through Sept. 30, subject to availability. Booking must be done over the phone; call 800-448-4471 and ask about the "Yankee Clipper" package.
