You know how guidebooks are always recommending flat, sensible shoes for travel abroad? No way, writes Doreen Hung Mar of McLean. "I think clogs make for great shoe wear when traveling abroad," she enthuses. "Especially in Asian countries, where shoes have to be removed before entering a home or a temple. I was recently in Japan, and found my clogs very convenient for the many visits to Buddhist and Shinto temples, where you must remove your shoes before entering. Also, they are ideal for visits to the fish or food market, where the elevation of the clog, especially the ones with a back, help keep your feet drier and cleaner than sandals or flat gym shoes."

This is one of those tips that never occurred to us before, but that makes perfect sense once you think about it. We hope Mar's new Washington Post Travel section T-shirt will coordinate nicely with her clogs on her next trip. Got a tip of your own to share? Walk through the fine print below.
