"When I retire for the evening at home," confides Demetrios Chaconas of Mt. Airy, "I put on my sound machine, which generates a 'white noise,' masking the sounds of passing cars, neighbors, etc. When traveling, to block the sounds of closing doors, noisy late-night guests and other noises that would interfere with falling and staying asleep, I search the television for a channel that is not receiving a signal, and turn up the volume to a comfortable level. It sounds just like the white noise generated by my sound machine at home."
We had our doubts about this one, but we field-tested Chaconas's hint on a recent trip and it worked perfectly although we did have to drape a T-shirt over the TV screen to drown out the light. Luckily, Chaconas will soon be the proud owner of a new shirt that he can use for that very purpose a Washington Post Travel section T-shirt, which we're sending him as a thank-you for sharing his tip.
