Like most American cities, Washington has seen a surge in lodging prices in recent years, with the median price for a hotel room hovering around $150. But it is still possible to sleep in comfort for a reasonable price. We've highlighted several properties where you can find a nice room for under $100. But first, a few other bargain-hunting notes: It is easier to find lodging deals on weekends, as properties that cater to business customers lower their rates. Washington hotel prices also tend to fluctuate by season, with higher rates during the summer tourist season. And though bargains can be found on the New York Avenue/Gateway corridor, this stretch is not particularly scenic and is not well-served by public transportation; stay there only if you have a car and are just looking for a roof over your head.
Hotel Harrington
With an ideal location just off Pennsylvania Avenue and prices far lower than those of nearby establishments, the Hotel Harrington is one of Washington's best values. Don't expect opulence, just a decent room for a low price with the easiest possible walk to the museums.
Adams Inn
Spread across three town houses on a quiet residential street, the Adams Inn is a European-style hotel in the heart of Adams-Morgan. Its location makes a good base to explore the neighborhood's many restaurants and clubs, or uptown attractions like the zoo. You can save even more off its already-inexpensive rates if you're willing to share a bathroom.
Kalorama Guest House
Similar in concept to the Adams Inn, the two branches of this property occupy former houses in the desirable neighborhoods of Adams-Morgan and Woodley Park. Rates include continental breakfast; many rooms have shared bathrooms.
Carlyle Suites Hotel
Just a few blocks from Dupont Circle, the Carlyle Suites Hotel offers a visitor the chance to live like a local. This former art deco apartment building features suites with kitchenettes, and is within walking distance of the Metro and scores of restaurants and clubs. Though slightly more expensive than previously mentioned properties, weekend specials often brings its rates below $100.
Arlington, Va.
For bargains in the suburbs, the Quality Hotel-Courthouse Plaza and Quality Inn-Iwo Jima are both attractive, inexpensive properties just a few minutes from the monuments. And directly between the two of them sits Motel 50, which offers little charm but clean rooms close to the city for the lowest possible price.
