Storm Claudette Heads to SeaThe Associated PressSaturday, July 14, 1997
Forecasters at the National Hurricane Center in Miami described the storm at "ragged looking." At 11 a.m. EDT, the center of the storm was located near 33.7 north latitude and 72.7 west longitude, about 195 miles east southeast of Cape Hatteras, N.C. Claudette is moving toward the north near 6 mph. "Although the forecast track does not show a large threat to land, the motion is uncertain and interests along the mid-Atlantic coast should continue to monitor the progress of this storm," according to a National Hurricane Center statement. Maximum sustained winds were near 45 mph, with higher gusts. Tropical storm force winds extend outward up to 50 miles mainly to the east of the center.
