Weather Glossary Wind is the natural motion of the air moving parallel to the Earth's surface. Winds are caused by unequal heating and cooling of both the ground and atmosphere, which is affected by such things as solar radiation, the Earth's rotation, cloud formation, etc. The unequal temperatures and changes in pressure cause the air to move, creating wind.
