Bin Laden's al Qaeda network is estimated to have anywhere from several hundred to several thousand members. It draws from a pool of more than 50,000 Afghan war veterans and other radical Muslims. Cells of the organization are believed to operate in 35 countries, including the U.S. and Canada. He also enjoys some support among Muslims who dislike U.S. influence on Arab governments, who feel their way of life is threatened by Western popular culture, and who resent Israeli treatment of the Palestinians.
