Pakistan is one of the few countries that has diplomatic relations with the Taliban regime in Afghanistan, where bin Laden is thought to live. After the Sept. 11 attacks, the United States demanded that Pakistan choose between the Taliban and the United States. President Gen. Pervez Musharraf agreed to assist U.S. military preparations for a campaign against terrorist leaders in Afghanistan. Islamic fundamentalist groups in Pakistan have vowed to oppose the government's support for U.S. military action and defend the Taliban.
