Robert G. Kaiser is associate editor of The Post and a former Moscow bureau chief. His books include Why Gorbachev Happened and The News About The News (with Leonard Downie Jr.). This is his first trip to Central Asia.

Lois Raimondo is a Washington Post photographer who lived for 12 years in Tibet, China, India and Vietnam. She travelled through Tajikistan last fall on her way to take photographs of the war in Afghanistan.
