Pope John Paul: 1920-2005

Papal Travels

Pope John Paul II traveled more than any other pontiff, visiting 130 countries and touching down on six continents. He may have been seen by more people than any other man in history. On his travels, he preached against communism and for improved relations with other faiths. He also worked to improve the church's image in the Third World.

HE DID NOT GO TO...
... Russia or China. His wish to visit Russia was unfulfilled because of objections from the Russian Orthodox Church, while the Chinese government was hostile to the Vatican's evangelism.
