Tehran
From its origins as a village in the 13th century, Tehran has grown into one of the largest cities in the world with some 7.7 million residents. It is the seat of the Majles, the Iranian parliament. In 1980, the personnel of the U.S. Embassy in Tehran were taken hostage by Iranian student militants for 444 days.
