The actress made her debut in the late 1980s, quickly becoming the nation’s sweetheart and earning a reputation as a box-office draw. Throughout much of the 1990s, she was one of the most popular actresses in the South Korean film industry. Dubbed the “nation’s actress,” Choi’s most famous roles were centered on marriage, motherhood or the image of a wife. She had been depressed since her 2004 divorce from baseball star Cho Sung-min. She also had been distraught over the suicide of a fellow actor, police said.
President Roh Moo-hyun
Roh was a suspect in a corruption scandal that implicated his wife and family. Prosecutors were investigating allegations that during his presidency he and members of his family accepted more than $6 million in bribes from a South Korean shoe manufacturer. Shortly after Roh’s death, Justice Minister Kim Kyung-han announced that the investigation would end.
Model Daul Kim
Kim, who modeled for Chanel, Dries Van Noten and Maison Martin Margiela, made her debut at Paris Fashion Week in 2007. The 5-foot-10 model was a fixture on fashion runways in Paris, London, Milan and New York, where she modeled for Dolce & Gabbana, Louis Vuitton, Anna Sui and Alexander McQueen. She was known for her quirky style and was an accomplished painter and filmmaker. Kim told of the pressures and loneliness of the catwalk in a blog titled “I Like to Fork Myself.” Friends said she was in a fragile emotional state. On Oct. 30, she wrote: “Mad depressed and overworked.”
Actor Choi Jin-young
The 39-year-old actor began suffering from depression after his sister, Choi Jin-sil, took her life. After canceling engagements for more than a year when his sister died, Choi Jin-young said he was resuming his career for the sake of his sister’s son and daughter. His agency said the comeback attempt placed him under a lot of stress. Choi made his debut in 1988 and appeared in many soap operas. He also became a successful singer, using the stage name Sky.
