Basilan
An island about 550 miles south of Manila, Basilan is an Abu Sayyaf stronghold where the group is holding its hostages. The rebels, who are intimately familiar with the dense jungle terrain and have powerful weapons purchased with ransom money, have avoided capture on the island.
