In May 2001, the Abu Sayyaf Group captured 20 tourists, including 3 Americans at a beach resort in Palawan province. The rebels are still holding one American couple hostage and claim to have beheaded a tourist from California.

Malaysia's Borneo coast
Sipadan Island: On Easter Sunday in April 2000, the Abu Sayyaf abducted 21 tourists from a Malaysian resort. The hostages were held for months before being released after several million dollars in ransom payments were made to the rebel group.
