Nairobi:
In August 1998, followers of Osama bin Laden launched simultaneous attacks on the U.S. embassies in Nairobi, Kenya, and Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. The bombings killed 224 people, 12 of them Americans, and injured about 4,600. U.S. officials believe that al Qaeda members operated out of Somalia while planning the attacks.
