Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.), who had pledged to oppose Mike Pompeo’s nomination as secretary of state, tweeted moments before the vote that President Trump had talked with him and changed his mind. Earlier, two Democrats said they would back Pompeo, all but guaranteeing that he will be confirmed by the full Senate later this week.
The move, coming just two days before Ronny Jackson was set to testify, comes after top Republicans and Democrats raised concerns about his qualifications and oversight of the White House medical staff.
Authorities took a 25-year-old man into custody after the attack, which also left 15 people hurt. Officials said the incident did not appear to have a connection to national security, though they did not yet know of a motive.
