The company beamed the software update to all its vehicles early Saturday, allowing owners to request a suite of advanced driver-assistance features — although they wouldn’t receive the capabilities right away. But as recently as July, CEO Elon Musk said the technology was a “debatable” proposition, and investigators now warn that the latest roll-out is a hasty approach to an issue that requires careful study and an emphasis on safety.
