Intelligence officials are increasingly skeptical of the Saudi account and have warned President Trump that the idea that rogue operators flew to Istanbul and killed journalist Jamal Khashoggi without the knowledge or consent of Saudi leaders is dubious, a White House official said.
The video recorded by Turkish law enforcement of a purported body double for the slain journalist leaving the Saudi Consulate was released as pressure mounted on the Saudi government to explain what happened to Khashoggi.
The killing of journalist Jamal Khashoggi has brought more attention to Mohammed bin Salman’s efforts to silence dissent in Saudi Arabia since he became crown prince. “There are no human rights defenders still free,” said Yahya Assiri, a Saudi human rights activist who lives in self-exile. “They are all behind bars.”
