President Trump declared in a tweet that an extension of a federal health insurance program for children “should be part of a long term solution, not a 30 Day, or short term, extension!” That directly contradicts the thinking of congressional Republicans, who sought to push Democrats into a corner over funding choices.
“The Wall is the Wall, it has never changed or evolved from the first day I conceived of it,” President Trump tweeted. It came after White House Chief of Staff John F. Kelly told lawmakers that the United States will never construct a physical wall along the entire stretch of its southern border and that Mexico will never pay for it.
A clash over immigration that has pushed the federal government to the brink of a shutdown is unfolding as a fierce tug-of-war — with the president as the rope.
