The president’s refusal during the debate to clearly condemn the Proud Boys extremist group prompted condemnations from Democrats and a muted response from Republicans.
For many members, the president’s comment during the debate was just the boost they craved, lending a new sense of purpose and legitimacy to their violent tactics and translating almost instantaneously into a recruitment drive.
The widely panned first presidential debate led the Commission on Presidential Debates to consider changes and forced a broader question about whether such events are still useful in the modern political era. 
The Fox News Channel program, usually a relentless booster of the president, criticized his showing in the first showdown with Joe Biden.
