House Republican leaders prevailed in lobbying the conservative House Freedom Caucus and defense hawks who demanded more money for the military in exchange for their votes. But with the Senate expected to vote late tonight, at least nine Democrats who had supported the last stopgap bill have said they will oppose this latest patch.
A funding lapse would mark the first time in U.S. history that there has been a government shutdown, with federal employees furloughed, when one party controlled both Congress and the White House.

The solicitor general asked the court to add the case to its docket this term, which would be unusual because the justices usually wait for a lower court to act and it is late for the court to add cases to its oral argument calendar which ends in April.
The online retail giant released a list of regions in the United States and Canada that it is considering for its second headquarters that could support as many as 50,000 future employees. The list includes major metropolitan areas as well as a slew of smaller communities.
The criminal cases against Larry Nassar are nearing an end, with a marathon sentencing hearing where 101 of the more than 130 girls and women who’ve accused Nassar of abuse are expected to speak. Nassar faces a 60-year federal term for child pornography crimes.
Cheyenne Rose Antoine pleaded guilty to killing Brittney Gargol and was sentenced to seven years in prison. Gargol was killed by strangulation, and a belt found at the scene matched the one Antoine wore in a photo that Gargol posted hours earlier.
