Hurricane Harvey has been called a “500-year flood” — a flood event that has a one-in-500 chance of occurring in any given year in that location. Mobile kitchen units, truckloads of tools and thousands of supplies are ready to help, but there is one problem: They are hundreds of miles away from Houston.
For those affected by Harvey, every day blurs into the same long surreal state of being physically wet, of feeling, hearing, smelling and even tasting water that was not only flooding roads and invading homes but inundating people.
