Arctic Update: Petermann’s travels

Back in August 2010, CWG helped break the story that a 97-square mile ice island had broken off from the Petermann Glacier in northwest Greenland. Since then, the massive chunk of ice has been on quite a journey: It hit the beach on a small island, broke up into many smaller pieces, and picked up some hitchhikers in the form of iridium beacons used to track the pieces.

Katrina: A lesson in risk mismanagement

Hurricane Katrina, which roared ashore five years ago this past Saturday, was not exactly a shining moment in risk management. Weather forecasters, including those who were then part of the independent website capitalweather.com, repeatedly warned about the extreme dangers presented by the hurricane with a name more befitting of an exotic woman than a deadly tempest.

Revolving doors in TV Weather

It's quite the fluid time in the world of TV Weather. Last week, meteorologist Bob Ryan made his debut at ABC7 (WJLA) after 30 years at rival NBC4 (WRC). But there is other significant shuffling happening on both the local and national television weather scene.
