Conrad Murray, Michael Jackson's doctor, gets his day in court

Conrad Murray was once paid $150,000 a month as Jackson's private physician. (AP) Dr. Conrad Murray, who has been charged with one count of involuntary manslaughter in the 2009 death of Michael Jackson, is due in court Tuesday for the first day of preliminary hearings to determine whether there is enough evidence to hold a full trial. The prosecution will present its case and 30 witnesses -- including police, medical experts and the coroner -- are expected to appear at the hearing, which will be attented by Jackson's family. "This Is It" choreographer Kenny Ortega is also scheduled to testify at Tuesday's hearing, according to TMZ. Ortega is reportedly expected to testify that Murray said some "terrible things" during a meeting with Jackson in the week before his death....

The anniversary of Michael Jackson's death: not much of a trending topic?

It's the anniversary of the death of Michael Jackson. And while the somber significance of the date is undoubtedly a major topic of conversation among the singer's ardent fans, it doesn't seem to be an overwhelmingly popular one on the Internet.

La Toya Jackson and the Bubbles reunion

As Liz and I both made clear in our Michael Jackson post Tuesday, we feel a measure of sadness about the upcoming anniversary of the pop singer's death. And our hearts certainly go out to his family members as they revisit their undoubtedly still profound grief. But I'm sorry, this video -- the one you are about to see below, of La Toya Jackson reconnecting with Michael's former pet chimpanzee -- is just ridiculous. As part of an Animal Planet special that apparently aired Tuesday night -- "Michael Jackson and Bubbles: The Untold Story" -- video footage was captured of La Toya Jackson reuniting with her late brother's dear chimpanzee pal, who now lives in a sanctuary in Florida. The clip is very emotional. In fact, I am quite sure I would have been moved if I had been able to stop laughing while I was watching it. I'm not...

Woman Claims Jacko Gave Her Baby to Tom Cruise

In addition to the myriad other head scratchers surrounding the the death of Michael Jackson, the one-time pop singer's demise finally provided a platform for a possible schizophrenic to gain national coverage of her fantastic delusions. On Monday, one Claire Elizabeth Fields Cruise -- a 43-year-old woman who describes herself as the president of the Department of Empowerment --- stepped forward claiming to be the mother of Michael Jackson's three children. Watch her presser outside the L.A. County Courthouse below: How Cruise managed to convince a gaggle of reporters to gather for a press conference I don't know, but at least one person -- a former high school classmate she claims is the real father of Paris Jackson -- is saying Cruise "is not quite right." Cruise claims to be the biological mother of Prince Michael, Paris and Blanket but not to have actually carried them herself. Not only that...

Katherine Jackson Gets Full Custody of Jackson Children

Prince Michael II (aka Blanket) clutches a Michael Jackson action figure at June's memorial tribute to his father. (Reuters) An agreement has been reached placing Michael Jackson's three children -- Prince Michael (12), Paris (11) and Blanket (7) -- in the care of his mother, 79-year-old Katherine Jackson. Jackson lawyer L. Londell McMillan broke news of the arrangement on Thursday's CBS "Early Show"; a press release from Jackson's lawyers said the agreement will be presented on Monday to the Los Angeles Superior Court for approval. The agreement also stipulates that Debbie Rowe, biological mother of Jackson's two eldest children, will have regular visitation accompanied by a child psychologist and that Rowe will not receive any compensation other than the spousal support she has already been receiving. "There is no situation better for these children than for them to be raised and reared in the loving care of Mrs. Katherine...

The Jackson Kids: What Now?

Prince Michael II (aka Blanket) clutches a Michael Jackson action figure at Tuesday's Staples Center tribute to his father. (Reuters) I have one nagging Michael Jackson-related issue that just won't let me rest until we talk about it. Michael Jackson's children, had the singer been alive and able to attend his own memorial service, would have been covered in veils or masks and daughter Paris would never have been allowed near the mic to share her heart-wrenching grief with 31 million viewers (in the U.S. alone). If the rest of Jackson's life -- his finances, health, career -- were a bit scattered, he was meticulous in one thing -- guarding the privacy of his three children. Until his death on June 25, the peeks we had of Prince Michael (12), Paris (11) and Blanket (7) were rare and, as mentioned above, their faces were often obscured by masks or...

What Will Happen to Michael Jackson's Kids?

If Michael Jackson's movements of the past decade were shrouded in mystery and rumor, the lives of his children were perhaps more so. Rarely seen in public, Prince Michael, 12, Paris Michael, 11 and Prince Michael II (aka "Blanket"), 7, may find themselves at the center of a legal battle over custody and the rights to what remains of Jackson's fortune. But what the kids need now is stability, says licensed clinical psychologist Dr. Andrea Bonior. "That most likely means keeping them in the same place where they've lived and trying to keep as many of the same people -- friends, child care providers, and family members -- near them, along with as much of their daily routine as possible." A custody dispute would likely be between Jackson's parents -- Katherine and Joe -- and Debbie Rowe, the mother of Jackson's two older children, son Prince Michael, 12, and daughter...

Michael Jackson: Separating the Artist from the Art

A makeshift memorial outside Michael Jackson's Los Angeles home. (Getty Images) A funny sort of thing happened on Thursday when word of Michael Jackson's death started to sink in to our cultural psyche: We weren't sure how to react. While it's true that scores of Jackson fans gathered outside the UCLA Medical Center where Jackson had been rushed by paramedics and the news propelled sales of Jackson's songs on Amazon, many of us hesitated. Reminiscences of Jackson's infectious hits were tempered by the ugly reality of multiple charges of child molestation, the man's seeming inability to cope with the world and his outre habits (children draped in veils, packing his one-time mansion Neverland with a village-worth of hideous life-sized dolls.) The memory of Michael Jackson, King of Pop, was threatened by Wacko Jacko, increasingly reclusive and derided freakazoid. But is it possible to honor one while continuing to back...

The Ka-Ching of Pop: Michael Jackson Unloads His Treasures

Imagine item 919, a hand-made Renate Hornung doll, in your entry hall. (Image courtesy Julien's Auctions) If you've got a little nest egg set aside to guard against homelessness or end of times, you may want to consider spending that money on a piece of history. Michael Jackson will attempt to stave off his own economic downturn when he auctions the "treasures" from his onetime ranch, Neverland, in April. In case you were wondering, no glittery gloves or Elephant Man bones will be up for sale, but treasures do include a demented "Ziggy the Talking Clown" gumball machine (item 724, $800 - $1,200) and a gaming system unhappily named the "Virtual Boy" (item 731, $100 - $150). If it's a little Latin flavor for the home you're after, why not bid on the slot machine hand-carved and painted to resemble a life-sized Mexican bandito? A bandito who happens to...

Coming to Terms with Michael Jackson at 50

A few weeks back, a chatter asked me to name something about the celebrity beat that really surprised me. I was stumped -- after witnessing the circus surrounding the death of Anna Nicole Smith and an endless stream of shenanigans from a dirty dozen of Hollywood hellions, one tends to get a bit desensitized. Then, this morning, whilst innocently gathering links for the morning mix, it happened. I was surprised to read that Michael Jackson is 50 years old (and possibly in need of a lung transplant). I mean, I knew he was 50 -- both Jacko and Madge hit the half-century mark back in August -- but it didn't fully sink in until today at approximately 6:07 a.m. And I'm not sure how I feel about it. Michael Jackson became, sometime around the early '90s, a man-child, the little boy who never grew up, a fly stuck in resin...
