The week ahead in traffic, transit

After this morning's brief encounter with winter weather, there's not much chance of bad travel weather for the rest of this week, though the temperatures will stay cold. Watch for continued crowding around the malls and the holiday light shows. Construction work that involves paving has slowed down a lot, but project managers still are looking for opportunities to complete some of these jobs. Meanwhile, Metro has plans for work on the Green and Red lines.

I-95 S to close overnight Thurs.

The Maryland State Highway Administration plans to close all lanes of Interstate 95 southbound between Caton Avenue (Exit 50) and I-695 (Exit 49) between 11 p.m. Thursday and 4 a.m. Friday. State officials said the total closures will be for 15-minute intervals as crews install a large overhead sign as part of a project to widen and reconfigure the I-95 ramps to westbound I-695. Closures will began as early as 7 tonight, with crews closing one lane. Two lanes will close by 9 p.m. The total closure will then begin at intervals after 11. Officials also said that the ramps from southbound 95 to east and westbound 695 will also be temporarily closed as crews hang the sign.

The week ahead for traffic, transit

There's some cold holiday shopping and commuting coming up over the next week, but there's not much chance of precipitation. D.C. commuters will warm to boiling on Thursday afternoon, because of the congestion around the National Tree Lighting. Many homes put up some spectacular holiday displays this past weekend, but don't let them distract your attention from the road ahead. The Capitals will crowd the Gallery Place area for 7 p.m. games at Verizon Center on Monday, Thursday and Saturday. The Wizards will be there on Friday night. Here are other potential sources of congestion.

Anacostia bridge building in new phase

So far, most of the visible work on the District's biggest transportation project has been done in the middle of the Anacostia River and on its east bank. Now, drivers on the Southeast-Southwest Freeway are going to get close to the construction of the new 11th Street Bridge. Over the next two weeks, contractors are scheduled to drive piles in the freeway median east of 11th Street SE.

11th St. Bridge work to disrupt traffic

The reconstruction of the 11th Street Bridge over the Anacostia River is the District's biggest transportation project, but so far, much of the work has been in the middle of the river or on the shoreline, usually away from traffic. Project managers said that as the construction advanced this year, drivers would see more of an impact on traffic, though mostly at off hours. Here's a schedule for such work from the District Department of Transportation.

VDOT to fix parkway problem

The Fairfax County Parkway was conceived at a time when some planners were dreaming of an outer beltway around Washington. But drivers know the parkway, with its congested intersections, is unlike any beltway they had in mind. The Virginia Department of Transportation hopes to change the parkway experience a bit by removing the traffic signals at the Fair Lanes Parkway intersection and building a highway-style interchange over the next three years.

First stretch of ICC will host foot race

Motorists who want a sneak peek at the new Intercounty Connector can get a glimpse of the six-lane highway before the first segment opens, but they won't need their cars. The Maryland Transportation Authority, which will own the toll road, is holding a 5-kilometer walk/run Oct. 17 on part of the highway that has been paved. The run will begin at Shady Grove Road. Entry fees -- $25 beforehand and $30 on race day -- will benefit the Special Olympics of Maryland, authority officials said.

The lane-closing program on the northbound 14th Street Bridge is about to reach its halfway point: This weekend, the work zone will shift again, blocking the far-left lane by the bridge's north side. The new pattern should be in place by the Monday morning rush, but drivers still will have four lanes open during the peak periods.
