Allen announcement expected soon on Senate run

As we reported earlier, former U.S. senator George Allen is expected to announce soon that he will seek the Republican nomination for U.S. Senate in 2012. Allen told The Post last month that he would probably announce his decision before Democrat Jim Webb (D) revealed whether he would run for reelection. Webb said in December that he would announce a decision in the first quarter of this year. In recent weeks, sources say, the former Virginia governor has been interviewing staff. Ben Marchi, the state director of Americans for Prosperity who announced last week that he is leaving the organization after three years, is widely expected to become a top adviser to Allen. Allen plans to open his campaign headquarters in Richmond, sources say.
