How to be taken seriously as a reformer (don't be an educator)

In the current upside-down world of education policy, there's one foolproof strategy for being taken seriously as a reformer: Make sure you're not an educator. Here, an educator writes about what counts -- and what SHOULD count -- in the school reform debate.

Obama girls miss two days of school; when is it okay to keep a kid out of school?

Malia and Sasha Obama are missing two days of school to stay on vacation with their parents, the president and the first lady. When is it okay to keep a child out of school?

Obama, the 'Superman' movie flack?

President Obama is welcoming to the White House the five young students who star in "Waiting for Superman." Thank you, Mr. President, for drawing more attention to the tendentious movie. The $2 million given by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to promote the movie apparently wasn't enough.

Rhee in trouble; Gray not helping

What was she thinking? Even for D.C. Schools Chancellor Michelle Rhee, who routinely attracts controversy, this time she really stirred up unnecessary trouble by telling a magazine that some of the teachers that she laid off last year because of budget cuts had been having sex with children and hitting them. Really? I can’t figure out if Rhee actually likes stirring up controversy or just muddles her way into it--or both--but in this instance, whether it was a hasty remark she didn’t intend to make or an intentional bomb, I don’t see a good way out. Why didn't she do something about it earlier?

Sidwell Friends scandal

If you ever labored under the illusion that kids who attend fancy private schools that cost $30,000 a year are any more insulated from scandal than anyone else, the arrest of a veteran Sidwell Friends School teacher on sexual abuse charges should dispel you of it. Year after year, bad things are reported at elite private schools, just like they are at public schools. Private school students have been caught printing counterfeit money to cover gambling debts, running mini prostitute rings; private school administrators have been caught stealing money, sleeping with students, and even committing murder. Human behavior--and misbehavior--doesn't stop at the walls of any elite institution. Any of the people connected with any of the expensive private schools have no bigger claim to a higher morality than anybody else. Attendance means nothing but the ability to attend.

What should schools do when they become the target of hate groups?

Some Washington area schools are being targeted for protests by an extremist church from Kansas whose website attacks gays, blacks, Jews and other minorities, as well as any whites who manage to get along with them. On Monday, Westboro Baptist Church members protested at private Sidwell School in the District, where President Obama’s two daughters attend. Yesterday it was Bethesda Chevy-Chase High School in Montgomery County because, the church website says, the school has a diversity club.
