Summer books for reluctant teen readers

Summer is the best time to entice reluctant readers to enter and learn to love books. It can happen, but there’s a trick: You have to let kids pick out their own books. To help you, the American Library Association has a great 2010 list of books for teens ages 12-18. Here it is.

Fairfax County schools reject book challenges

Parental challenges to books in school curriculum usually make when district officials succumb to the challenge and restrict or remove the resource. But some don’t. Some stand firm and reject the challenge. That’s what Fairfax County Public Schools in Virginia--one of the finest systems in the country--has been doing for years in the face of a handful of challenges about books in its classes.

Taking Anne Frank off shelves: Indefensible

It isn't the first time that a classic book has been pulled off a library shelf because a parent didn't want their darling child to read it, but it is equally obscene every time it happens. This just happened in Culpeper County Public Schools, where a version of the “Diary of A Young Girl,” by Anne Frank was removed from schools because a parent complained about graphic sexual language, according to the Star Exponent.

Teen: Writing a research paper without the Internet is hard

Studying over the Internet is very distracting; there are so many different ways to get sidetracked that it almost seems inefficient. If I learned anything from staying up until the early morning, it’s that there are actually a few merits to those dusty old encyclopedias. That’s not to say that I’ve stopped using search engines lieu of textbooks, because I haven’t and you shouldn’t either.By Adam Turay.
