First stretch of ICC will host foot race

Motorists who want a sneak peek at the new Intercounty Connector can get a glimpse of the six-lane highway before the first segment opens, but they won't need their cars. The Maryland Transportation Authority, which will own the toll road, is holding a 5-kilometer walk/run Oct. 17 on part of the highway that has been paved. The run will begin at Shady Grove Road. Entry fees -- $25 beforehand and $30 on race day -- will benefit the Special Olympics of Maryland, authority officials said.

Parts of New Hampshire Ave closed

A contractor working on New Hampshire Avenue as part of the Intercounty Connector project struck a gas line at about noon today, causing the emergency closure of a stretch of the road from Randolph Road in Wheaton north to Bonifant/Good Hope roads. Closures are expected to last through tonight's rush hour.

Md. proposes ICC bus service

Readers have asked Dr. Gridlock about mass transit on the Inter-County Connector, the controversial highway in the works for more than half a century, and Maryland officials have weighed in with an answer. They're proposing two express bus routes are expected to operate along the new Intercounty Connector and existing roads connecting P & R lots in Montgomery County to the BWI Airport, MARC Penn Line, and Fort Meade when the first stretch of highway opens.
