‘The Last Jedi’ teaser delivers the thrilling Luke Skywalker shot we were looking for

IT IS the most thrilling image to pop up in a Star Wars trailer since Disney gained the deed to George Lucas’s galaxy.

The red, white and blue button lights cast their low glow, and there, beneath the hood like a prodigal space superhero, are Mark Hamill’s grizzled whiskers.

At last, Luke is back aboard the Millennium Falcon.

That split-second moment in the new TV teaser spot for December’s “The Last Jedi” provides not merely a jolt of nostalgia — a visceral reaction so often sought since the first footage of 2015’s “The Force Awakens.” No, the quick shot also ripples with the electric tingle of narrative possibility.

It is a masterful peek — one that, for stoking anticipation, eclipses even seeing Leia Organa (Carrie Fisher) wearing the ever-heavier crown of leadership, or Rey (Daisy Ridley) wielding her lightsaber in the rainevoking phantom memories of young Obi-Wan in “Attack of the Clones.”

Master Skywalker is ready to reengage. The fight is on, as darkness rises and the light must meet it.

After three years of trailers, at last, this was just the perfect shot we were looking for.
