There remains some optimism for Washington Redskins guard Arie Kouandjio after receiving a second opinion on a quadriceps injury suffered last week.

Coach Jay Gruden said Friday the fear was Kouandjio had torn a quad and that would lead him to missing the 2018 season. There’s hope he could be sidelined for a shorter period of time after the second opinion.

ESPN reports that Kouandjio will have surgery this week to fix a partially torn quad. The severity of the injury will be assessed during the surgery and the recovery period is unknown, but expected to be several months.

Several months is better than all season.

The injury is another hit to an offensive line that was ravaged last season. Tackles Trent Williams and Morgan Moses are coming off surgeries and 2017 center Spencer Long finished the season on injured reserved. Long signed with the New York Jets in free agency during the offseason and will be replaced by Chase Roullier.

Kouandjio was expected to compete for the starting left guard position after an offseason in which the Redskins did not bring in someone new through free agency or the draft. Shawn Lauvao has been the starter the past four years, but injuries have been a constant issue as he hasn’t played all 16 games in any season with the Redskins and twice played fewer than 10. Lauvao was expected to leave via free agency, but recently signed a one-year deal to return.

Doug Williams, senior vice president of player personnel, said a guard was considered in the draft, but the players on the Redskins’ board were gone by the time they were ready to address the position. They did draft Louisville tackle Geron Christian in the third round, but he’s expected to stay on the outside and receive work on the left and right edges. Veteran tackle Ty Nsekhe is thought to be able to slide to guard while Tyler Catalina and Kyle Kalis are other backup guards on the roster. Two-time Pro Bowler Brandon Scherff starts at right guard.

Organized team activities start on June 22.
