Amy Nichols

An avid dog lover with a keen business sense, Amy founded Dogtopia in 2002 when she opened the first location in Tysons Corner, VA. It was the first dog daycare business in Fairfax County and Amy predicted that busy professionals, facing long commutes and hours away from their homes, were in great need of an alternative to leaving their beloved dog at home alone all day.

In 2004 Dogtopia of Tysons Corner grossed more than $1 million and Amy knew there was unlimited potential! In 2005 she franchised the concept nationally, and to date there are 23 Dogtopia locations across the country.

Amy has been featured on the CBS Early Show, CNN, ABC, NBC and Fox News channels and in The Wall Street Journal, USA Today, The Washington Business Journal, The Washington Post, Franchise Times, SmartCEO Magazine and People Magazine. She was the recipient of the Enterprising Women magazine’s “2006 Enterprising Woman of the Year” and in 2008 she was recognized by the Washington Business Journal as a “Woman Who Means Business.” She is also a 2011 recipient of SmartCEO’s “Brava! Women In Business Achievement Award.” Dogtopia has been included on the INC 5000 list of the fastest growing companies in America for three consecutive years.

In 2009 Amy testified before a congressional panel on the impact of legislation on small business. In 2007 and 2008, Amy lectured at the Dingman Center for Entrepreneurship at the University of Maryland on the topic of franchising.
