Telenet Communications Corp., president Dr. Lawrence G. Roberts has been promoted to chairman of the board and Anthony A. Barnett has been elected to succeed him as president.
Robert formerly worked in the Department of Defense on the planning and development of a computer communications network based on packet-switching technology. As Telenet president, he guided the company in the development of the first commercial packet-switched data communications network.
Barnett is a past senior vice president of Bunker Ramo Corp. As part of his computer communications work he supervised the development of the NASDAQ system, a computer network that provides information on over-the-counter stocks. He was also responsible for Bunker Ramo's joint venture with Dow Jones, which resulted in the Dow Jones News Information Service.
New corporate vice presidents of Fairchild Industries, Inc., are George S. Attridge, corporate comptroller of Fairchild Industries; William R. Beckert, general manager of Fairchild Stratos division in California; Harry Dornbrand, president of American Satellite Corp., a Fairchild subsidiary; Richard G. Orr, general manager of Fairchild Industrial Products division in North California; and Robert C. Woods, also elected vice president and director of manufacturing of Fairchild Republic Co. in New York.
The Asia Mail, a new monthly publication from Potomac-Asia Communications, Inc., in Alexandria has named Edward Neilan editor and publisher. Nellan is a former diplomatic correspondent and assistant bureau chief of the Copley News Service Washington bureau. He will continue to write a weekly "Asia Memo" column, which is syndicated by Copley.
Newsweek magazine has named Peter T. Kilborn senior editor in charge of the magazine's business news section, Kilborn joines Newsweek from the New York Times, where most recently he was an economics and general assignment writer in London. Prior to joining the Times in 1974, Kilborn did a five-year stint with Business Week magazine.
Richard J. Ecroyd has been elected president and director of Contee Sand and Gravel Co., Inc., in Laurel, Maryland, Ecroyd was senior vice president for operations of the company.
United Services Life Insurance Co. has promoted Edward L. Evans Jr. to vice president for policy administration.
United Nuclear Corp. has named Calvin B. Andringa senior vice president for executive planning.
Two new vice presidents at Newport News Shipbuilding, a subsidiary of Tenneco, Inc., are Daniel F. Galvin and G. Guy Via. Galvin, who joined Newport News Shipbuilding in 1951, will handle the company's purchasing and Via, who started with Newport News in 1936, will direct the company's ship repair activities.
