National Geographic Society has promoted Paul Sampson chief of the society's news service. He succeeds Windsor P. Booth, who has retired after 26 years as chief. Sampson has been with the news service for 18 years and has been assistant chief for the past nine years.

Prior to joining the society's staff in 1959, Sampson worked as a reporter for the Winona (Minnesota) Republican-Herald, the Dayton Journal-Herald and The Washington Post.

Avemco Insurane Co. of Bethesda has named John H. Ballard vice president for claims. Ballard has been an assistant vice president of the aviation casuality insurance company since 1975.

Anne W. Hamilton has founded Coordinators, Inc., and is its president. The company plans and arranges meetings and social events. Hamilton is former manager of the National Press Club and she was executive manager of Ridgewell's Caterers for a period last year.

Maryland National Corp has named Hugh A. Woltzen vice president and division manager of its new credit services division. The new division will perform the credit function for the company's non-back subsidiaries.

Duncan A. MacRae was also named a vice president in the division. He is former vice president and senior credit officer of Maryland National Industrial Finance Corp.

John Hanson Savings and Loan, Inc., of Forestville has named Robert E. Ruckle vice president. Ruckle was formerly with the division of building of the Savings and Loan Associations of Maryland.

Loewenthal, Walker and Associate of Rockville has become Loewenthal, Walker and Heimberg since Michael J. Heimberg joined the firm. He is former vice president of Abramson Himelfarb advertising agency.

Thomas A. Gaddis, owner of La Mancha Restaurant of Springfield and past president of the Restaurant Association of Metropolitan Washington, was named Restauranteur of the Year at the association's spring meeting in April.

The United States Railway Association has appointed John W. Sibley vice president for finance and operations. He has been assistant vice president for finance.

Equitable Life Insurance Co. of McLean has elected Fred M. Gregg Jr. a director. He is the company's executive vice president for marketing.

First Maryland Bancorp has elected Robert I. Schattner to the joint board of the company and its principal subsidiary. First National Bank of Maryland. Schattner was chairman of the board of the Hancock Bank, which merged into First National on March 31.

Roy Littlejohn, president and founder of Roy Littlejohn Associates, Inc., has been elected a director of the Bank of Columbia, N.A. of Washington.

New members of First & Merchants National Bank's Arlington-Fairfax regional board of directors are Ralph M. Bogart, John O. Marsh, George P. Shafran and Basil M. Winstead.

Bogart is a partner in the insurance firm of Bogart & Brownell of Maryland, Inc.

Marsh, now a partner in the Washington office of a Richmond law firm, was a repersentative from Virginia's 7th district and later counsel to President Ford.

Shafran is founder and president of Better Homes, Inc. He is also president of Home Traders, Inc.

Winstead is president and chief executive officer of Holly Enterprises.
