Laker Airways today begins daily no-reservation, low-cost flights to London from here and back.
Flights leave every evening at 11 p.m. from Kennedy Airport and arrive at Gatwick Airport in London 10 a.m. the next day. Gatwick is a 35-minute train ride from London's Central Victoria Station; trains leave every 15 minutes. The flight from London leaves at 5:30 p.m. London time each day.
Only one-way tickets are sold. A one-way ticket to London cost $135 plus $3 departure tax. A London-New York ticket is 59 pounds (about $102).
Tickets are sold beginning at 4 a.m. each day of departure on a first-come, first-served basis for cash or travelers checks only. Laker is seeking approval to accept credit cards in the future.
You can purchase tickets for yourself, family members and one friend, provided you have their passports with you. Tickets are sold and check-in takes place only at the Laker Travel Center, 95-25 Queens Blvd., in Rego Park, a building halfway be-subway from Manhattan and the airports. Free bus service is provided for passengers from the Laker Travel Center to the United Air Line terminal at Kennedy, where the Sky train departs.
Baggage is checked when the ticket is purchased. The free baggage allowance is 44 pounds, including one piece of hand luggage. Normal airline meals are served on board, provided they are purchase, at extra cost, at the time the ticket is purchased. Drinks and movie sets are also available at extra cost.
