During 1979 Giant opened four food and pharmacy stores and completed major remodeling on three other stores. Construction is under way on three new food-pharmacy stores in Edgewater, Md., Shady Grove Road and Crabbs Branch Way in Montgomery County and in Clinton, Md. The company plans to build a food-pharmacy in Waldorf, Md., and two are scheduled for Baltimore County. On Oct. 10, Giant opened a food-pharmacy store at 7th and O Streets NW, the first new chain supermarket to appear in the city in 11 years. "After 7th and O, things will start to happen," said Cohen, who hopes the company will expand further in the District. During the year Giant also expanded its computerized check-out system to all stores (the first major U.S. chain to do so) and upgraded the system so that drug items can be separated from other items on the checkout slip. This innovation is expected to assist in customer income tax preparation.
