Atlantic Research Corp. named William Borten as president and chief operating officer, succeeding Coleman Raphael, who continues as chief executive officer and takes the new title of board chairman.

Borten, 45, joined Atlantic Reseache in 1971 as vice president and director and since 1974 had been executive vice president and treasurer. In other appointments announced last Friday, W. Gerald Hamm was named executive vice president; Charles Henderson becomes senior vice president; and Christopher Robertson, Keith Britton, James Sides, George Summers and George Oss were named vice presidents.

"These promotions and the expansion of our executive staff have been made necessary by our recent dramatic growth," Raphael said. Atlantic Research has tripled in size in the last five years. Hamm, 49, joined the firm in 1961 and has headed the propulsion division since 1974.

Paul F. Lumbye Jr. has been promoted to manager of the production department of ARC's propulsion division and Gary L. Lewis has joined the division as manager of the product assurance department.

Larry Rissanen has been appointed eastern regional sales representative for LogEscan. LogEscan markets a laser plate-making system designed primarily for the newspaper industry.

John I. Leahy has been named president and chief executive officer and Robert L. Swam has been named executive vice president and chief operating officer of Black & Decker Inc.
