Comsat General Corp., a wholly owned subsidiary of Communications Satellite Corp., has restructured its operation into three major units and has named senior officers to head each unit.
The three divisions are satellite systems, communications and information products and systems technology services.
William L. Mayo, previously vice president of marketing and business develoment, will be in charge of satellite systems, focusing on the design, ownership and operation of satellite systems to meet special client needs. Comsat General operates two of these systems: Comstar, a three-satellite system leased to AT&T for domestic service, and Marisat, also a three-satellite system which provides satellite communications for the U.S. Navy and commericial maritime industries.
Michael S. Alpert, formerly vice president of planning and new ventures, will head up the communications and information products unit. He will be responsible for the develoment of two relatively new product-oriented business -- Comsat General TelSystems Inc., a maker and seller of high-technology communications equipment, and Comsat General Integrated Systems, the company's entry into the computer-assisted design and computer-assisted manufacturing market.
Burton I. Edelson will continue as senior vice president of systems technology services. The unit provides a broad range of services for the development of satellite communications and information systems applications and technology. Systems technology services currently is working on an international mail delivery system using satellite transmissions.
