First National Bank of Maryland has made these appointments and promotions: Vincent A. D'Onofrio, of the financial services division, was named senior insurance officer. John A. Mullikin is now insurance officer. Dennis Trencher was named international banking officer, and Daniele Khalaieff and David Thornton were named international operations officers. Jerome R. Keil was appointed senior documentary control officer, and Patricia M. King was named assistant operations officer. Richard F. Treadwell was named systems development officer.

Luther H. Hodges Jr., chairman and chief executive officer of National Bank of Washington, has been elected to the board of directors of Materials Research Corp. in Orangeburg, N.Y.

Loretta A. Tessier has been appointed assistant vice president of the Alexandria branch of United Virginia Bank. She was formerly a marketing officer there and joined the bank in 1976.

Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond has elected Edward H. Covell chairman of the board of its Baltimore branch. He will fill the unexpired term of Joseph H. McLain, who died in July. Covell is vice president and division manager of Country Pride Foods Ltd., Delmarva Division, Easton, Md.

Minta D. Branham, formerly assistant cashier at First American Bank of Washington, has joined Minority Broadcast Investment Corp. as an assistant vice president in charge of finance and administration.

The Potomac Group of the National Association of Bank Women has awarded the first Olive Scott Benzies Educational Award to Nancy S. Alsfelder, assistant trust officer, Riggs National Bank. She will apply the scholarship grant to law school expenses at George Mason University
