Universal Securities Inc., an Owings Mills, Md., company that designs and manufactures telephones and security devices, reported second-quarter profits were up more than 200 percent to $65,631 (2 cents per share).

That compares with profits of $20,417 (1 cent) reported for the same period last year.

Revenue grew to $3 million in the July-September period, compared with $2.5 million the previous year.

For the company's first six months, net income dropped to a loss of $904,200 (24 cents), compared with a loss of $160,999 (6 cents) for the same period of 1983.

American Management Systems Inc., an Arlington company that develops and operates computer software systems for managing business and government organizations, said its profits for the third quarter were up 53 percent to $812,000 (48 cents per share), compared with $532,000 (32 cents) in the same quarter last year.

Revenue grew to $25.3 million in the third quarter, compared with sales of $21 million the previous year.

For the first nine months of the fiscal year, net income rose 47 percent to $1.9 million ($1.14) on sales of $69.4 million from $1.3 million (78 cents) on sales of $58.4 million for the comparable period of 1983.

Radiation Systems Inc., a McLean company that designs, manufactures and markets high-technology antenna products, reported first-quarter profits from July through September were up 11 percent to $970,000 (22 cents per share), compared with $872,000 (19 cents) in the same period last year.

Revenue rose 28 percent to $7.2 million in the third quarter, compared with sales of $5.6 million last year.

American Fuel Technologies Inc., a Federalsburg, Md., fuel ethanol producer and refiner, reported a loss of $586,722, compared with a profit of $9,523 in the same quarter last year.

Revenue dropped to $987,718 in the first quarter, compared with sales of $1.7 million the previous year.

The National Bank of Washington said its profits for the third quarter were up 42 percent to $2.7 million ($1.93 per share), compared with $1.9 million ($1.40) in the same period last year.

NBW said its net income for the first nine months came to $7.9 million ($5.77), a 93 percent increase over profits of $4.1 million ($2.98) the year before.

Jefferson Bankshares in Charlottesville reported third-quarter earnings rose 14 percent to $2.5 million (92 cents per share), compared with $2.2 million (81 cents) in the same period last year.

For the first nine months, net income dropped to $7.3 million ($2.63), compared with $7.7 million ($2.76) last year.

CACI Inc., an Arlington company that provides consultancy and technical services, primarily to the Defense Department, reported first-quarter profits of $563,561 (6 cents per share), compared with $11,715 (0 cents) in the same period last year.
